Chicago Toy Soldier Show

The 2016 Chicago Toy Soldier Show was a winner!

Early on Sunday, 25 September, the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg, Illinois awoke to more than 350 tables of toy soldiers staffed by more than 150 dealers.

General admission on Sunday equaled that of previous years, with greater numbers of families and children in attendance. The Chicago Show continues to be an international event with representation by dealers from Argentina, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Italy, Peoples Republic of China, and Spain; the largest contingent of dealers continues to come from the UK. Estimates are that the Sunday Show and room sales before the Show attracted more than 1,500 toy soldier collectors to the Hyatt.

By all reports, the three days of room sales-for which the Chicago Toy Soldier Show is famous-were record breaking. Dealers involved in room trading-135 in all-shared that room sales were the best on record and that collectors added phenomenal finds to their toy soldier collections.

Jan and Roger Garfield, the new Show owners, initiated some new processes that were well received by dealers and attendees. Show managers greeted dealers at the Hyatt reception desk with complete dealer packets. Dealers had the option of having a boxed lunch delivered to their tables on Sunday to help ensure uninterrupted sales. The Garfields focused Show marketing efforts on increasing attendance, especially attendance by families with children. These future collectors were seen exploring the Show with treasure maps on clipboards; when children completed the treasure hunt, they received-what else?-a prize of toy soldiers donated by Toy Soldiers of San Diego, Toys of Yesteryear, and W. Britain.

Jan and Roger are delighted with the success of their first Chicago Toy Soldier Show. They credit previous Show manager Don Pielin for his help in making the transition to new ownership seamless.

The Garfields have innovations in mind for the 2017 Chicago Toy Soldier Show, to be held Sunday, September 24, at the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg. Mark your calendars now!
